Have you ever imagined how fulfilling it is to navigate through a well structured website, where you don’t struggle to find information? Everything is just heavenly with every search you stumble upon a website.

Honestly, every website aims at leading visitors through its pages which can be achieved by improving the user experience on a website by making it easier for visitors to find the content they're looking for.

What is Dynamic Navigation Menu?

A dynamic navigation menu is a type of navigation menu that automatically updates itself based on the content of your website.

A dynamic navigation menu is a website navigation menu that can change and adapt based on factors such as user interactions, device type, or other contextual information.

Here, the menu items are generated automatically, rather than being hard-coded into the site.

They are common in content management systems, such as WordPress, and are often used to provide easy access to pages, categories, and other types of content on a website.

For example, when a new page is added to the site, the navigation menu will automatically include a link to that page, without the need for manual updates.

They also simplify the process of updating the navigation menu, as new pages and content are automatically added to the menu without manual intervention.

In WordPress, dynamic navigation menus can be created and managed using the "Menus" feature, which is available in the "Appearance" section of the WordPress dashboard.

It is a modified concept of the Menu component, used when the number of actions available to the user is variable.

It can also be used when the number of actions in the menu is large enough that a search functionality would be required.

Components of a dynamic navigation menu.

The component is composed of:

  • Popover, coupled with either a listbox of options or an always expanded Autocomplete Combobox
  • List of additional actions pinned to the bottom of the dialog.

The Popover and pinned actions are constant through the 3 different states the Dynamic Menu can take.

When there are no actions other than the pinned actions, static content is displayed in the body of the Popover to inform the user of the empty state.

When there are 10 or less options in the menu a listbox is used to display them in the body of the Popover.

When there are more than 10 options an Autocomplete Combobox is used to display some options and allow searching through the rest of available options that may not be displayed.

Both the listbox and Combobox versions come with Up and Down arrow key navigation through the list.

The listbox variant should only have a single focusable option.

The Combobox variant should follow the expected keyboard behavior listed on the Combobox Component page.

The dynamic navigation menu customizes the feature display of the website to the size of your screen, irrespective of whether you are using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

This allows users to easily search and browse through your website without having to worry about the type of device they have, and as a result, they might end up staying longer on your website and taking action, such as leaving their details or signing up for newsletters.

3. Progressive disclosure

Dynamic navigation learns a user’s behavior and provides progressive disclosures as the user navigates the website.

Through this, the user gets additional information on whatever they are reading. This also saves the time that one spends on a site and can aid a user further in decision making.

Progressive disclosures also help in avoiding overloading a page with information.

4. Additional interactive features

Dynamic navigation provides additional interactive features on a website such as autocomplete search suggestions and hover over previous.

These features greatly improves usability of a website and save the time that one spends on site to get what they are looking for.

Dynamic navigation adapts to the activity that the user is having on a particular website and provides information relevant to that activity. It can also sieve information and provide what’s relevant to the user’s location.

How to Use Navigation Menus

Using the drag and drop functionality, you can use navigation menus to add custom links, pages, and posts to your menu.

You can also change a menu’s appearance by adding custom-built styles and adding CSS classes to menu items.
