Citations, aka NAP Citations, Business Listings, Local Listings, Directory Submission, are simply listings of your business details such as Name, Address, Phone Number, etc., in local, national, international, and industry-relevant directories.

Citations help improve online visibility, boost brand reputation, and compete with other local businesses in the SERP (Search Engine Results Pages) & in the 3 Pack (GMB Map Pack).

Well, we all know the importance of citations, so without any further ado, let’s get straight to the point.

Common Mistakes “I’ve noticed” Business Owners/SEOs Make While Creating Citations

Note: The points/views you are about to see are based on my opinion and experience in the industry, and some of them may not be true or applicable to some of you. You be the judge!

1. The More The Better

FALSE!

While it may have worked for you a few years ago but now it doesn’t expect for few industries where the competition is too low. I’ve seen people creating 350+ citations and, in few cases, 500+ on spammy de-indexed sites that don’t have any value. CHECK POINT 2.

You must be wondering, what is the good number of citations a business must have then?

Well, it can be 5, 50, or 500.

Wait! You just said that too many citations don’t work anymore?

Yes, I did. But, please reread it. I said, creating citations on spammy and de-indexed sites. As long as you’re building quality (actual citations sites indexed on Google) and adequately maintaining the correct NAP (Name, Address, Phone Number), you’re good.

There’s no case study or proof on 1. Having too many citations harms local or map pack rankings 2. Having a lower number of citations harms local or map rankings.

2. "No-Index" Sites

Are you aware that some of the citation sites have Meta Robots Tag aka Robots Meta Directives set as “noindex” for all the new pages or profiles which are created only with the sole purpose of getting a High DA, DR, TF, CF link?

What are Meta Robots Tags?

Meta Robots Tags (similar to robots.txt) are pieces of code that provide crawlers instructions for how to crawl or index web page content. However, robots.txt file directives give bots suggestions for crawling a website's pages; Meta Robots Tags provide more firm instructions on crawling and indexing a page's content.

3. Missing Out on Niche Sites

Niche citations are those citations that are relevant to your industry. Relevance is the crucial factor in both Map and organic rankings, the more relevant it is to your business, the more chances of getting a higher rank. But, again, there’s nothing guaranteed in SEO.

Note: Since most of the niche citations are paid, we don’t do it. However, if you’ve got a list of relevant sites to your industry please send it to us and we’ll try to add it.

4. Duplicates and Incorrect NAP Details

I’ve seen so many buyers send me wrong details that is totally incorrect and doesn’t match with the GMB. For example: -

Many people worry that having multiple citations with the exact wording might cause a problem with SEO rankings in Google or other search engines. This is because the citations themselves are not an issue, but where they appear could be a concern.

If you were to acquire additional citations through directory listings based upon these slight differences, it would seem like spam to Google and potentially hurt your SEO rankings. Therefore, citations should only be obtained from reputable sources and should be done correctly to ensure NAP consistency across all the sites.

5. Indexing

Indexing citations doesn’t guarantee a boost in rankings, and there’s no case study confirming it whatsoever. But, what indexing does is increase your brand\business visibility on the SERPs and also increases trust.

Do a quick search of your business name on Google and check whether or not your business appears like these shown in the picture below.

Does your business show up on the SERP like these? If not, you need to index them ASAP.

Just put yourself in your customers' shoes and think will they trust your brand/business over your competitors whose business has taken all of the SERP. According to Google/Ipsos, U.S., Omnichannel Study – “53% of  customers  say they always do research before they buy to ensure they are making the best possible choice.”

If you deal a lot on GMBs like verifying, editing, etc., you know how vital search presence is before doing anything with your or your client’s GMB.

As soon as you order, you’ll be directed to Legiit’s Buyer Requirement Page. You’ll find a Citation Form where you need to fill up all the details. If you have a doc, sheet, or text file ready with all the details, you don’t need to fill out the form. Instead, you can attach the file to the order, and we’ll start working.

2. Do you verify every details before listing?

Yes, we match every detail before we start the project to make sure it’s error-free. Please check point 4 under the heading “These Common Citation Mistakes Are Sabotaging Your ‘MAP’ Rankings” to know more.

3. Do you check duplicates?

Yes, we do! We use online business listing scanners and our own Google Search Operators, aka Google dorks, to check where your business is already listed. Apart from that, we also check your business details and NAP details manually before listing them on any citation websites.

4. Do you provide niche citations?

As mentioned above, most of the niche citations are paid or subscription-based. You can provide the list of sites where you want me to add your business, and I’ll try.

4. How long does it take to index?

We drip-freed over 30 days. After that, you can check how many of your citations have been indexed and how many have not.

5. Do you guarantee indexing?

To be honest, I don't have any control over this and can't tell you the exact amount of links that will be indexed. However, I can assure you that most of them get indexed. We've seen quite a good number of our citations get indexed on Google, but still we don't guarantee anything.

6. You prices are good, do you use any tools/software/bots for submission?

No. Our team has created all our citations who have years of experience and has created thousands of citations for hundreds of businesses across the world.

7. Do you add business on Yelp, Yellowpages, etc.?

Please Note: We don’t create citations on a website that needs a phone verification (Yelp and YellowPages), or we won’t be able to do listings on sites under the control of YEXT, such as BIZWIKI and Small Business Yahoo.
