• Lead Generation - Sell leads (form submissions and phone calls) directly to local businesses or to an affiliate network
  • Create a GMB and sell leads (part of my criteria is poor map pack results so there should be low competition for GMB with these keywords)

Affiliate networks will usually sell these leads for 2-5 x what they pay you, so selling direct can be even more lucrative. Building a portfolio of websites/GMB across multiple locations and niches can be lucrative. Imagine owning 10 websites/GMB able to generate 1 lead per day each and they paid you $20.00 per lead.  

Those of you in the GMB game this is a profitable way of making money. In some keywords there might not even be any local businesses in the location so making a GMB in the location should help insanely with ranking.  

Local SEO/Affiliate is where the money is to be made. With sites monetized with Amazon Affiliate and similar programmes commission is usually low, conversion rate is lower and competition is much higher. You might compete with hundreds of thousands of pages for some keywords, often from large authority websites with highly optimized content and backlinks.  

With local SEO/Affiliate you might only compete with a couple of local companies in the area and the rest of competition comes from directory sites like Home Advisor. The big directories rarely have any backlinks so their page strength is usually very low. A few strong back links can outrank directories. In fact, the more directory websites you see ranking for local terms the better! The local websites in some niches/locations are poorly optimized and look like they were made in the 1990s. Even better, a lot of them have only a handful of backlinks.

I have a list of 230+ home services I use for niche selection. Even if you targeted 2 niches and all cities between 10-100k pop. that's a lot of keywords, much more than you'll ever get with something like Amazon Affiliate. It's near impossible for local keywords to become saturated because there are millions of combinations of keywords.

NOTE: because of the highly inaccurate nature of local search volume focus is placed on population vs search volume. It's not uncommon to find some city + niche keywords with 0 monthly searches despite there being a demand for a service in the area. I have come across common home service niches with 0 search volume even in places with 50,000+ population.  

I also use data such as median income of a location, the number of dwellings, zip code data, Google Trends and other factors.

Running multiple websites myself I have seen this firsthand by comparing Search Console impression data with population and monthly search volume from multiple keyword research tools.

I have strict criteria for choosing local keywords; I spend a lot of time analyzing SERP (including map pack) and competitors to find the best local keywords possible.

I will focus 1 keyword around 1 niche or city. For example, if you supply the city "Boston" I will find one niche + city term and any related terms (if applicable), if you supply the niche "plumber" I will find one plumber + city for you.  

Note: I will look at suburbs and areas in a city and the city itself to find keywords, if you'd like plumbers in Boston I might choose the keyword "plumber mission hill ma"

No worries, I can pick this for you. At minimum just give me the country, any guidance on a rough location or rough niche is ideal but not required.

Why Don't You Use These Keywords if They're so Good?

I am growing my own  portfolio of local websites but there are millions of decent keywords out there in the local space, it's a space which  is near impossible to saturate.  

What Metrics do I use?

I use Keywords Everywhere/Keyword Keg for search volume and Ahrefs for keyword difficulty (KD) scores. I prefer Keywords Everywhere/Keg as both utilise Keyword Planner and Clickstream data (what Ahrefs uses) so is a little more accurate for search volume  in my opinion.  

Can I specify a minimum monthly searches?

Yes, you can, however in doing so you will limit yourself massively. Many keywords that have higher search volume will be in competitive locations and will be harder to rank. You can make money with 0 monthly search terms.
